Applying a transition framework to social change through grants.
Because AFF is a new grant making organization, applicants should carefully review materials describing
our program and mission before applying for a grant.
In particular, grant pplicants should pay special attention to AFF's overarching grant making theme of transitions.

Many communities are searching for effective
vehicles to address and move beyond the violence
they experience. While retributive models designed
to identify and punish aggressors have their place,
some communities are exploring restorative justice
models. The common theme here is to restore dignity
to individuals and to provide a process for healing
that allows the community to move forward.
We believe that, whether we are trying to change systems or to position individuals to mange change successfully, it is imperative to pay attention to the psychological processes that enable people to move from the old to the new. Within and, in particular, at the end, AFF will explore whether attending to transition more purposefully increases the chances that youth can successfully move into independent living.
We believe that one way we can attend is by providing a caring mentor who can help guide them through the three stages of transition. We will support programs that maximize these youth's potential by going beyond job placement to career track planning, and from high school diploma equivalency (GED) preparation to achieving post- secondary education goals. Within this framework, AFF will include programs with a particular focus on gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered youth.
